Hair Removal History - Why Do We Do It?

Why do we suppose that hair removal procedure is rather normal? Have you ever thought over the reasons of such sometimes rather painful procedures? Is all this done only for pretty appearance? Well, probably, for today's people hair removal has acquired only such simple reasons as good looking and common hygiene practice. For our ancestors, hair on different parts of the body were sings of various social and religion identity. Nowadays we still can observe that hair removal rules can be followed for national or gender identity.

But still the main instinct of a human being is to survive, but not to look pretty. So, it can be asserted that the first reason of hair removal is a common hygienic practice. Thus, in Ancient Egypt, most people depilated their entire bodies in order to avoid infestation by fleas, lice and other parasites. Hair removal also minimizes body odor, because it is caused by the micro-organisms in hair. But still, there are opponents of pubic hair removal, just because it helps to spread special pheromones which attract the members of the opposite sex.

It should be said that hair removal became increasingly common only in the 20th century. Since that time women in Western countries start to practice hair removal because of social values that consider it unattractive and not feminine. Nowadays some women reject any body hair removal methods, just because they suppose that such a procedure is an oppressive ritual. In other words, the world of men dictates how a woman has to look and behave in order to has no problem with social acceptance. But still, we decide by themselves whether to do this procedure and what hair removal method to choose.

Some people suppose that our aesthetic views were created under the influence of art. Just look through the numerous masterpieces where a nude woman is depicted. As a rule, all these art paintings portrayed a woman with no pubic hair. The reason of it was very simple: pubic hair was linked to sexual acts and desires, and it was prohibited to paint it. So, it can be called an ordinary advertisement.
